Waves of the Same Sea: The Making of Adios Ke Aloha captures an extraordinary recording session that reunites Mexican and Hawaiian musical traditions forged nearly two hundred years ago. Venerable music legends Taj Mahal, David Hidalgo (of Los Lobos), Hawaiian masters Gary Haleamau and Sonny Lim explore their deep cultural connections with Mexican American folk revival group Los Cenzontles. Mixing Hawaiian slack key guitars and lap steel with Mexican harp, accordion and jaranas, old and new songs are sung in Hawaiian, English, and Spanish. Directed by Chris Brown, the film depicts intimate performances and warm camaraderie that celebrate the enduring legacy, and Mexican roots, of the paniolo—the Hawaiian cowboy.

The band has performed across the United States, Mexico, Cuba, the UK, and the Dominican Republic, sharing the beauty of their Mexican roots all over the world through their media productions. The group’s members were trained at their Cultural Arts Academy and have worked with many Mexican folk musicians and diverse renowned artists as well.
Los Cenzontles’ core members also serve as the programming staff and teachers of our academy. They pass on musical traditions to new generations and invite their students to perform with them on stage and participate in production projects.
