Green Film Festival presents:
BIG RHONDA
When a burnt out tech worker chases an influencer’s vision of off-grid freedom, she instead crashes into the harsh realities of van life and a new friendship that challenges everything she thinks she knows about healing, home, and hashtags.
Q&A with filmmaker expected after the screening.
CLIMATE CONTROL
A director making a documentary about fossil fuel extraction is consistently subverted by an AI agent that wants to tell a generic love story.
Made in collaboration with Gen Z film students at Cal Poly Humboldt, the film looks at generational responses to the climate crisis through an absurdist lens, connecting the extraction of natural resources to the extraction of our human data and the extraction of our attention in this post-information era.
Q&A with filmmaker expected after the screening.
THE EPIC OF ENKIDU
When the catastrophic king Gilgamesh meets the grass-fed Enkidu, things don't go according to the clay tablets. A fractured take on the cuneiform tale, featuring doom, despair, deception, and sheep.
OWED TO LAKE MERRITT
Verna, a traveling birder from the Midwest, comes to Oakland to see its bird sanctuary and immediately falls in love with Lake Merritt, until a stranger opens her eyes to the deeper problems on its surface.
Q&A with filmmaker expected after the screening.
FISH-TWO-FISH
BLUE and RED live trapped in a strange routine wearing only pufferfish hats and underwear. They pass the time on a worn-out couch, surrounded by board games, stale snacks, and the flicker of a TV. A life-sized statue of a deep-sea diver silently watches over them. Every door is locked. The water is running out. And there’s only enough for one. Forced to confront their bizarre reality, they hatch a desperate plan: to escape by smashing through the door with the diver statue. What waits on the other side? A surreal tale of survival, friendship, and the blurry line between captivity and freedom.
MISERY AND OTHER CHOICES
The world sizzles with climate change. A politician lets it burn. A young couple finds out they’re pregnant. What should they do if they find that politician alone and barely breathing? ‘Misery and Other Choices’ is a darkly comic drama short that asks what will you do when the world’s on fire?
Q&A with filmmaker expected after the screening.
FOOTPRINTS
A rabid environmentalist comes to blows with a neighbor who refuses to recycle.
Forget the guilt trip, the Green Film Festival of San Francisco, the mischievous, tree-hugging cousin of the 29 year old SF IndieFest, returns Oct 15-22 to prove that saving the planet doesn't have to feel like homework. We've ditched the doom-and-gloom documentaries that make you want to crawl under a (sustainably sourced) blanket and never come out. The line-up this year pairs sharp environmental storytelling with wit, weirdness, and unapologetic irreverence. And yes, our Eco-Horror midnight movie is back!
Whether you’re an eco-curious cinephile or a die-hard activist, come join in the fun because if we're going to talk about the end of the world as we know it, we might as well laugh, gasp, and maybe even dance a little on the way there. Through this experience the festival hopes audiences can begin to engage with sustainable solutions to the problems facing the planet.
