MOViES FOR MANiACS presents Scumrock (2002) - 20th Anniversary Bash ~ 7:00 PM

  • 4 Star Theater 2200 Clement Street San Francisco, CA, 94121 United States (map)

Hosted by Jesse Hawthorne Ficks, come celebrate the 20th Anniversary of this Bay Area bonanza by legendary underground filmmakers Jon Moritsugu & Amy Davis! Purposefully shot on analog Hi-8 and edited on linear VHS(!) in 2002 while all other filmmakers were jumping on the digital camera revolution, Scumrock follows a pretentious underground filmmaker (played by Kyp Malone, lead singer of TV on the Radio) who is struggling with his "masterpiece" while a scuzzy punkoid chick (inhabited by fashion illustrator goddess Amy Davis) is battling to keep her "ponk rock" band from fading into obscurity.

Jon Moritsugu & Amy Davis are quintessential contemporaries with Gregg Araki and Todd Solondz for creating disaffected independent 1990s cinema. Filmed entirely in the Richmond District of San Francisco and chock-full of memorable performances by Bay Area experimental filmmakers including Craig Baldwin, Danny Plotnick, Courtney Stephens and Valerie Soe, as well as a hilarious role by the mythical James Duval, Scumrock is arguably one of the most important movies ever made in San Francisco. Brand new restored DCP courtesy of AGFA (American Genre Film Archive).

Doors open at 6:00pm, event begins at 7:00pm with three newly restored films by Danny Plotnick: Skate Witches (1986), Dumbass From Dundas (1988) and Elevator to Stardom (2023) + directors Jon Moritsugu & Amy Davis will give a pre-recorded introduction! Attendees will also receive special hand drawn screen prints designed by Sofia Caldas along with a slew of raffle prizes and vintage Jon Moritsugu & Amy Davis giveaways. Snag your tix fast, this is going to be a night to dismember!
