LIVE MUSIC: France, Pateka, Agnes Martian ~ Doors at 7:00 PM & Music at 8:00 PM

France

With Sauvage on bass, the France template was laid down quickly – a single, steady, mid-paced rhythm, which, as on the France Do Den Haag Church album, often goes "boom-boom-boom-tchak" and provides a bedrock for Gourdon’s searing, time-and-sense-scrambling explorations of texture, volume and duration.

“Mathieu said to me not so long ago, ‘I think I’ve understood how to play the rhythm properly’. Ten years later!” Sauvage tells me, chuckling.

The performance space is enlisted as a fourth member; each France recording is of a live show, with the trio responding to the acoustics of the place. Their discography functions as “an archive of moments” according to Sauvage, although nothing could ever capture the deliciously disorientating, hallucinatory experience of being in the room while the band are in full flow. —David McKenna, The Quietus

Pateka

A four-piece experimental rock group from the San Francisco Bay Area, Pateka’s genre-bending songwriting style draws on the close-knit bond of childhood friends Elihu Knowles (keyboards/vocals), Dylan Ransley (guitar), Quinn Girard (bass) and Ryan Higley (drums). The band, which is based in Richmond, creates a unique blend of synthesized sounds, samples, off-kilter grooves, and expansive, jazz-influenced harmonies. Pateka’s sound has been compared to a variety of artists, including Palm, Badbadnotgood, Sweet Trip, Mid Air Thief, Jon Bap, Sun Ra, Pulgas, Os Mutantes and Standing on the Corner.

Agnes Martian

Agnes Martian soundtracks a planetarium that charts undiscovered constellations of inner space. Started by Benjamin Rodgers and Zekarias Thompson in 2019, the collaboration grew out of a weekly ritual of deep listening and collective cosmic exploration. All of our many iterations have retained an interest in repetition and improvisation.
