7:00 PM: HOOSIERS (1986) – Is this the greatest sports film of all time?  We would say yes.  There's Bull Durham, and there's Breaking Away, and Raging Bull is great of course, but Hoosiers works the underdog formula so expertly that it’s no surprise the film feels fresh and vibrant 40 years later.  Much of its appeal comes courtesy of the fantastic star turn by Gene Hackman, whose work here, a canny mix of aw-shucks bluster and below-the-surface slyness, is juxtaposed with Dennis Hopper's charming hoop-savvy drunken assistant coach role (it was a big year for Hopper, who starred in Blue Velvet that same year, and was... less charming in that one).  The story of second chances, tough choices, weathering opposition, and overcoming adversity is a familiar one, but Hoosiers has that characteristic that sports films so often celebrate in their athletes but don’t always possess themselves as films: heart.

ROBERT MAILER ANDERSON: Anderson is a native San Franciscan, 9th generation Californian, writer, producer, filmmaker (Windows on The World, Pig Hunt) activist, author of the bestselling novel Boonville, and nominated for 3 Grammys as a music producer. His most recent work is the graphic novel My Fairy Godfather (Fantagraphics) - dedicated to The Castro Theater. He is also known as "DJ GrampaPhone” - spinning 78 records on his 120-year-old gramophone.
