FISTFUL OF LOVE
(plus post-screening Q&A with Director & Photographer Reynaldo Rivera)
Fistful of Love is Mexicali born, LA based photographer Reynaldo Rivera’s debut film compiled from his personal archive of Hi8 tapes. Appropriately titled, Fistful of Love, is set against the backdrop of post Reagan era 1989-1997 Los Angeles. We are invited to experience the intimate world of Reynaldo’s lovers, friends, and family. Lingering feelings of an angsty raucous young adulthood are present throughout, posing questions like “What is your reason for living” while displaying a life fully lived. Synonymous with Reynaldo’s subversive subjects and timeless photographic style, this film unfreezes his memories and displays an honest portrayal of an authentic queer and ethnic existence in spite of any hardships. Scenes from long-gone underground drag clubs and queens, political unrest, house parties, punk performances, drugs, and cruising are a poignant portrayal of life in Los Angeles through the uncensored lens of the queer latino lifestyle. Edited in a nonlinear storyline by filmmaker Pablo Bujosa Rodriguez told in a queer language that needs no translation, unless you’re an outsider looking in. If you are a fan of Reynaldo’s work you will recognize reoccurring characters in their natural elements and true selves. Reynaldo’s ability to present someones best side shines through in Fistful of Love.
