SF CritterFest presents:
UNSPOKEN BOND

Unspoken Bond is a feature documentary that explores the deep connection between humans and animals through three touching stories demonstrating how animals enrich our lives beyond measure.

Shannon Dueck, a top dressage rider, grieves deeply after losing her Olympic-hopeful horse Angel to a severe injury. Yet, she gradually finds her way back, supported by her community and new equine friendships.

Nicole Navarro overcame 18 years of addiction to establish Pawsitive Beginnings Fox Sanctuary in the Florida Keys, where rescued foxes from fur farms and the exotic pet trade now aid trauma survivors in their healing journey.

Jason Gaver, a veteran dealing with PTSD and significant loss, reconnects through Woodrow, his service dog, who helps him be present for his young daughter and reintegrate into everyday life.

Guided by top experts, the film delves into the science and soul of the human-animal bond — a relationship that provides unconditional acceptance, healing, and happiness.

Q&A with director Don Hardy to follow the feature screening.

GIANNA & ANNE: SIGNIFICANT OTHERNESS

Anne and her cow Gianna can be described as what philosopher Donna Haraway terms a "companion species." They communicate in their own language and are connected in "significant otherness."

SF IndieFest's latest festival is CritterFest, September 17 - 20, 2026, a series of films about animals, pets, wildlife. CritterFest is interested in exploring the profound resonance and interaction between humans and the animal kingdom with an eye towards the animal-human relationship.
